The parathyroid glands are responsible for ensuring that the level of calcium in the blood remains within normal limits. There are four parathyroid glands, each the size of a rice grain. Although anatomically located in the posterior part of the thyroids, they have no interrelated functions.

In the case of under-operation of the parathyroid gland, which regulates calcium levels in the blood, the amount of calcium in the blood decreases and hypoparathyroidism occurs. If the glands are overworked, hyperparathyroidism develops due to the increase in the amount of calcium in the blood.

Both of these changes in the parathyroid glands cause some diseases to occur.
